The labor day weekend brings the end of summer vacation for many and the beginning of a new school year. I ask God's blessing on all those beginning or returning to school this fall. I look forward eagerly to the beginning of our religious education program and the great things that we will do together. I consider myself fortunate also to be part of Long Beach Catholic School and I look forward to getting over there during the year and especially getting to know the families from our Parish at Long Beach Catholic School.
Of course we honor all those who work in various capacities on this Labor Day invoking the intercession of St. Joseph the patron of all workers. At the same time, we thank God for the opportunities we have to work and pray for those seeking work especially in our community.
I promised you an update on the rectory building. This week saw the demolition of the arch above the front door of the rectory. The cross from the top fell on Monday (I am grateful no one was hurt.) Inspection of the arch showed further deterioration and so work began immediately to remove the arch. In the meantime, there are leaks that will be repaired on the roof. We will have to see what can be done about restoring the arch in the future.
On another note, we will be hosting the Diocesan Campus Ministry on Saturday Sept. 18th at the 5:00 pm Mass. Cardinal John Henry Newman will be beatified that weekend and our Campus Ministry Newman clubs from all the local campus will join us in Long Beach for a day of celebration culminating with a Holy Hour and Confessions at 4 pm., the parish Mass at 5 pm. and a barbecue hosted by the Knights of Columbus at 6 pm. I want to invite any college student here in St. Mary's to join us for the celebration.

El fin de semana del Día del Trabajo marca el punto final de las vacaciones de verano para muchos y el comienzo de un nuevo año escolar. Pido la bendición de Dios para todos aquellos que inician o regresan a la escuela este otoño. Espero con impaciencia el comienzo de nuestro programa de educación religiosa y de las grandes cosas que haremos juntos. Me considero afortunado de ser parte también de la Escuela Católica de Long Beach y espero llegar allá durante el año y especialmente conocer a las familias de nuestra parroquia en la Escuela Católica de Long Beach.
Por supuesto que honramos a todos aquellos que trabajan en varias capacidades en este Día del Trabajo invocando la intercesión de San José, el patrono de todos los trabajadores. A la vez, damos gracias a Dios por las oportunidades que tenemos de trabajar y orar por aquellos que buscan trabajo, especialmente en nuestra comunidad.
Les prometí una actualización en el edificio de la Rectoría. Esta semana se vio la demolición del arco sobre la puerta principal de la rectoría. La cruz de la parte superior se cayó el lunes (estoy agradecido que nadie resultó herido.) La inspección del arco mostró un mayor deterioro y fue así como comenzó el trabajo de inmediato para eliminar el arco. Mientras tanto hay goteras que serán reparadas en el techo. Tendremos que ver qué se puede hacer para restaurar el arco en el futuro.
En otra nota, nosotros tendremos la sede del Ministerio de Campus Diocesano el sábado 18 de septiembre en la misa de las 5:00 pm. El Cardenal John Henry Newman será beatificado ese fin de semana y nuestros clubes Newman del Ministerio de Campus de todo los recintos locales se unirán a nosotros en Long Beach para un día de celebración que culminará con una Hora Santa y Confesiones a las 4 pm, la misa parroquial a las 5 pm y una barbacoa organizada por los Caballeros de Colón a las 6 pm. Quiero invitar a todo estudiante universitario aquí en Santa María a unirse a nosotros para esa celebración.
