The faithful of St. Mary of the Isle Parish in Long Beach celebrated the Feast of Corpus Christ with an outdoor procession on Sunday, May 25th. Rev. Christopher Nowak carried the Blessed Sacrament under a golden canopy and led the festive pageant which progressed from the Church to four flower bedecked altars in the parish field. He was accompanied by Msgr. Robert Brennan and Deacon Donald Stamm. First Communicants and other children sprinkled rose petals on the path the procession followed.
The Feast of Corpus Christi, also known as the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ was established in 1246 and the procession dates to 1275. St. Mary’s parishioners used the prayers written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the day and joined in singing the ancient hymns as they moved to each of the altars and finally to the Church for the final Benediction. |
