Thanksgiving Food Drive

November 2011

On Tuesday and Thursday, November 15 and 17, 2011 St. Mary’s volunteers, under the supervision of Blanca Cales, Outreach Director of both St. Mary’s and St. Ignatius, once again distributed food baskets and turkeys to over 450 people, many of whom are registered at the community centers of St. Mary’s and St. Ignatius. Volunteers gathered on the days before to pack all the bags which were to be distributed. Then, when a lot of the bags were not picked up for one reason or another, the volunteers once again came through and delivered the rest. We are very proud to report that the Thanksgiving Food Drive 2011 was a huge success thanks to the many volunteers and the many donations made by parishioners and surrounding churches, especially St. Francis Church in Manhattan who donated 170 turkeys to us.

In addition to receiving a food basket and turkey, each family was given the opportunity to choose a winter coat this being possible through the generosity of St. Anne’s Church, in Garden City and St. Rose of Lima, in Massapequa, who both had coat drives and donated the coats to us. We would like to take this opportunity to thank both parishes for their generosity.

We would also like to mention that Thanksgiving Day will be much brighter this year for many of the people in our community, not only because of the food baskets and turkeys, but because of the fact that St. Mary’s is also hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner in our parish hall on Thanksgiving Day beginning at 2:00 pm. for all the needy in our community. All are welcome!
